ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals shined in their home opener against the Giants today, delivering a 8-2 victory to a crowd of 40,071 adoring fans. Bob Tewksbury pitched a complete game and managed an RBI double, while first baseman Gregg Jeffries finished 3-for-4 with a home run.
Giants slugger Barry Bonds went 1-for-4 with a single.
"The Cardinals executed very well. Their assault on Burkett was seemingly endless," the Giants manager said after the game.
AROUND THE LEAGUE:
- The Houston Astros defeated the Phillies 20-6 in their opener at the Astrodome.
- Darryl Strawberry hit two home runs for the Dodgers as they blanked Florida 10-0 in Miami.
